Book of the Day: Oh, Nuts!

My Predictions for Today’s Events…
I figured the kids would like this story & want to talk about squirrels and chipmunks (even though the book lets us know that these cute little guys are chipmunks, I figured some of the kids would think they looked like squirrels & they did). I never even thought about Alvin & The Chipmunks with this story, so even though that went perfectly with our book, it did surprise me that the kids associated the two. Them thinking that up, definitely added a lot of fun into the day when we got to dance to the Alvin & The Chipmunks soundtracks…

Activities Produced from that Story:
Squirrel Decorating
Playing with Acorns
Dancing to the Soundtrack from Alvin & The Chipmunks
Acting out the Alvin & The Chipmunks Movies
Watching a NatGeo Video about Flying Squirrels
Making our Decorated Squirrels fly on a Homemade Zip line

What We Learned Today:
That there are different types of squirrels
We learned how flying squirrels fly
Learned new vocabulary
We learned about gravity when placing our squirrels on the zip line
Worked on fine motor skills when decorating our squirrels by drawing & putting stickers on them
We learned grouping & sorting techniques when playing with the acorns
Worked on estimation skills when trying to fill up cups with acorns & rice
Learned about nature when playing with the acorns
Had sensory experiences with the acorn play
Worked on math & counting skills when counting the acorns
Worked on teamwork when doing the zip lining activity together
Used visual tracking when watching our squirrels on the zip line
Used large muscles while dancing
Used imaginations while pretending to be characters from Alvin & The Chipmunks
