How I Predicted Today Going…
I really wasn’t sure how the kids would like this book. Since I knew I was going to be gone for Fourth of July this year, I wanted to pick a book with a patriotic theme. I thought maybe at least one child would know about the Pledge of Allegiance or know something about the US flag, but none did so it was pretty brand new to them which lead into lots of discussions.

How I Predicted Today Going… I thought the kids would get a kick out of this book. They did think it was pretty funny, but I don’t think they really picked up too much on the moral of the story (no matter how mad your parents make you, you would be lost without them). Their favorite part was about the mud and the little girl trying to get her bike up and down the hill.

We made a list of things that we like that our parents do & a list of things we don’t like that our parents do
We made a town & pretended to get stuck on a hill
Making the town then turned into sorting vehicles into like group (trucks, cars, tractors, vans, etc…)
We made “mud” paintings

What We Learned Today:
That it’s ok be mad at the people we love
Love is unconditional

Worked on sorting/categorizing skills when sorting the vehicles

How I Predicted Today Going…
This isn’t one of the most exciting books, since I wasn’t that excited about it, I didn’t expect them to be…however, we do have a couple kids that are a little behind on learning their shapes so I purposely choose that book to help them. I thought this story would get the kids looking at things in different ways & being able to see the shapes in things which may help those that are struggling learning them. And, I was right, I think they found every single shape in our room that day…

Went on a shape hunt around the classroom
Built with our 3D foam shapes
Made patterns with our 3D foam shapes
Set up a book center with shape books
Did match a shape puzzles
Made house photos with paper shapes

What We Learned Today:
That shapes are EVERYWHERE!!! We broke things down into shapes to help those that are struggling learn a new approach at seeing shapes
Used fine motor skills & large muscles to make shapes with our bodies
Worked on fine motor skills when playing with the 3D foam blocks
Worked on color recognition when playing with the 3D foam blocks
Worked on shape recognition when playing with the 3D foam blocks
Worked on patterning when playing with the 3D foam blocks

Worked on communication skills when I paired the kids up in groups in the shape book center. I had a master of shapes help a new learner of shapes by pointing out all the shapes in the books to them.

How I Predicted Today Going…
Since one of our previous books turned into the frog direction (even though it wasn’t about frogs…) I wasn’t sure if the kids would come up with new ideas for todays frog story (and they did come up with some repeats which is fine, I just don’t want them getting bored…) but the biggest surprise with this story was that they wanted to discuss so much about how the rabbit was mad at the frog and how they said sorry to each other in the end. They really are getting good at understanding feelings and emotions better.

Made frog cards for our monthly community project
Played a frog jumping game
Made a frog water bin
Had a discussion about feelings & emotions

My predictions with these stories…
Today was story time at Jacolyn Park, so we based our activities off the books that they read to us. I was being pretty biased with my predictions and “assumed” that the girls would automatically associate the stories with flowers, the boys I didn’t think would be too interested at all…maybe they would go in the direction of a dog since Biscuit was in one of the books, maybe not. But they really surprised me and the day turned into learning about gardening and water. Thought the watering discussion would be more about watering the grass or flowers, but they wanted to water everything but…which is how we ended up playing “car wash”.

Activities Produced from that Story:
Checked on our herb garden, brought the plants inside to cut herbs to cook with & re-watered them
Made a flower craft
Did some flower math (worked on add flowers together and matching flower cards with the same amount of flowers)
Looked through the refrigerator to find all the vegetables we could to make “garden salads” for lunch
Did water play & played “car wash”

What We Learned Today:
Learned about science as we tended to our herb garden. Talked about how the sun & water helps them grow & checked their growth since the last time we tended to them.
Worked on self-help skills as we poured water into the herb plants.
Used imagination & creativity when creating our flower craft.
Used fine motor skills when working on our flower craft.
Worked on pre-math skills (adding, counting & matching amounts)
Talked about food groups & nutrition.
Worked on identifying colors as we talked about all the vegetables we found.
Learned how some new vegetables (like radishes) tasted.
Had sensory experiences with the water play.
Learned about cause & effect with the water play (the kids learned if you get the sponges wet, they will stick on the vehicles).
Learned about taking care of property when playing “car wash”.
Used large muscles when playing “car wash”.

Considering that Five Little Monkeys Jumping on The Bed is one of my groups all time favorite stories, I thought they would be a lot crazier and we would get sidetracked a bit, but not all of them have heard this story with our favorite monkeys so they were very intrigued. Their favorite activity was to run around outside like the “Five Little Monkeys”.

I know how much the kids love Clifford, so I had no doubt they would like this book. I also figured we would end up talking about dogs, but I was actually surprised when they started asking questions about Washington and the different monuments that Clifford saw while he was in Washington, lead right into them starting to ask questions about our own state, we had a great discussion.
